We can help you deal with it.
CEN also occurs when a parent or caregiver exposes a child to extreme domestic violence, allows the child to engage in maladaptive behaviours, refuses to seek treatment for the child’s emotional problems, or doesn’t provide for them in an adequate and emotionally structured way.
Being emotionally neglected as a child can be a devastating experience, the effects of which can carry over to adult life, affecting the adult's sense of self-esteem, capacity to trust, and ability to build healthy relationships, it can also affect their physical health.
It is common for children to be unaware of their emotional neglect before signs emerge in adulthood. This is usually because the emotional neglect they suffered at an early age was an act of omission on the part of the parent or carer, and so there isn’t a particular experience to refer to and thereby remember.
However, in some cases people will have vague memories of their parent or primary guardian not paying attention to them, invalidating their feelings, and imposing difficult or seemingly unattainable expectations on them. For a child, the absence of empathy, validation, nurture, caring or concern can be severely detrimental to their well-being and can have long-lasting consequences throughout their life. This type of trauma can affect a child’s coping mechanisms and cause complex post-traumatic stress disorder and emotional numbness. If this sounds familiar, then you might have experienced childhood emotional neglect yourself. Learning about childhood emotional neglect can help you address your needs better and take steps to repair the damage you have suffered as a result.
Fortunately, there is help available. COACHD can help you repair the damaging effects of childhood emotional neglect so that you can live the life you deserve.
An example of emotional abuse or psychological abuse is when a parent tells their child that it’s their fault that they got bullied by another child, belittling, and diminishing them verbally. Conversely, emotional neglect is when a parent fails to acknowledge the experience that the child has gone through (suffered) altogether. Because emotional neglect is mostly predicated on acts of omission, i.e., the parent does nothing rather than something, it is by far the most difficult type of neglect to understand and identify.
Below are possible signs of emotional neglect in children, the effects of which can also be found in adulthood:
Signs of emotional neglect in adults:
We help our clients understand that their thoughts become reality, so they can actively work towards changing that reality into something positive, uplifting, and healthy. We not only help our clients improve their emotional health but many aspects of their physical health too. Emotional pain is often expressed through the body, so we work on improving our client's patterns of thought so that their physical self is affected positively as a result.
If you’ve been routinely convincing yourself that you aren’t worthy of attention and lack self-worth, your mind will do everything it can to make that your reality. Depression, loneliness, and emotional detachment are all good examples of this, they are your mind and body's response to the beliefs you hold about yourself and a way of protecting you from a fear of failure or rejection.
Repeated negative thoughts will demotivate you and give rise to an even more powerful ‘inner critic’. This inner critic will keep you exactly where your thoughts tell it you want to be. Although the mind resists change, it is brilliant at learning through repetition – tell it something enough times and in the right way and it happily recodes itself to the new instruction. That’s an aspect of the mind that COACHD takes full advantage of with our Rapid Transformational Therapy™(RTT™) and Hypnotherapy when treating clients for issues relating to their childhood, including childhood emotional neglect.
Every thought you think, every word you say to yourself and every picture you create in your mind, form a blueprint that your mind and body work to make your reality. And since your mind responds to the thoughts and words you tell it, then, by definition, it will protect them and make them your reality. Knowing this, you can see that your reality isn’t something external to you, it is whatever reality you create in your mind.
