For many people, fears and phobias have a serious negative impact on their lives.
We can help you overcome your fear or phobia. Category: Mental Health Conditions: Phobias, Fears, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) Back to What We Treat Fears, phobias, and obsessive compulsive disorder We treat clients for many different fears and phobias, the most common phobias that we treat are the fear of cats, dogs, birds, insects, and dirt. We also treat clients for obsessive-compulsive disorders (OCD), which elicit certain behaviours in a person, some of which can appear bizarre in nature.
An OCD is a condition that manifests in several ways, including placing objects in exact positions, following a strict order when performing certain tasks or actions, and repeating a task or action a set number of times, or until the person feels in control again. Sometimes the compulsion is focused on aspects of a person's physical appearance, rather than being focused on objects. In some cases, OCD rituals can become incredibly complex and convoluted and can involve smell, touch, taste, sight, and sound rituals, pretty much everything imaginable. OCD behaviours can also be time-consuming, depending on their complexity and frequency, and they can be physically, mentally, and emotionally draining for the sufferer and those around them.
Research suggests that people who suffer from obsessive-compulsive disorder have an increased risk of addiction or substance abuse disorder. Certain substances and medications can also cause or worsen OCD symptoms.
The following information explains how fear becomes a phobia and how we support our clients to overcome their fears and phobias and compulsions forever. Three powerful rules of the mind We use Rapid Transformational Therapy™(RTT™) and Hypnotherapy to help our clients install three powerful rules of the mind, empowering them to take control of their minds rather than be controlled. These 3 rules are:
The words you say to yourself and the pictures you create in your mind (your imagination) directly influence how you feel.
Your mind likes what is familiar to it and dislikes what is unfamiliar. It will always steer you towards the familiar.
The only thing you will ever truly have control of is your thoughts. Change your thoughts and you can change your life – you always have a choice.
The words you say and pictures you create influence how you feel When it comes to overcoming fears, phobias, and compulsive behaviour, one of the most fascinating rules of the mind is that ‘the way you feel is in direct response to the pictures you create in your head and the words you say to yourself’.
But how does this work in reality?
To give you an example, humans produce between 0.5 and 1.5 litres of saliva each day, or 262 litres a year, take a moment to imagine that much saliva, not inside your body but outside your body. Keep imagining it for some 10 seconds or so and then study the picture you've created in your mind of all that saliva, just sitting there. Perhaps you’ve contained it somehow in plastic bottles? and if so, I’ll place an imaginary bet they were clear bottles sitting atop an imaginary table – or was that just me? What I can confidently say is that almost immediately the mere thought of all that saliva is making you feel uneasy, slightly repulsed, a bit grossed out, or worse. But hold on a moment it’s just your saliva, you created it and well heck you consumed between 0.66ml and 0.87ml of it on that last swallow. So why are you feeling so unsettled? Well, that’s all because of the words and pictures you created in your mind when you imagined your own saliva outside of your own body. Instantly you felt compelled to give it new meaning and in doing so you most likely imagined your saliva as not belonging to you anymore, and a sense that it’s contaminated, germ-ridden and full of disease. You possibly even reimagined its temperature, texture, and taste, and so did I. So, I’m going to ask you one more question, how do you feel about taking even a tiny bit of that saliva and drinking it? ... I’m quite sure I know your answer to that too, and yet it’s only your saliva, not someone else's.
The point here isn’t for you to fall out of love with your good old saliva, it’s 98% water and an important part of a healthy body. No, the point is merely to illustrate that the words you say to yourself and pictures you create in your head, your imagination, not only influence how you think and feel about something but can easily override your logic in the process. Imagination is always more powerful than logic – a fear of flying is a good example of this. You could have imagined your saliva differently from the way you most likely did and felt perfectly comfortable as a result. However, those words and pictures (your imagination) will have been directly influenced by a multitude of beliefs you already hold, perhaps not directly relating to saliva, yet they influenced your thoughts nonetheless, which then created the feelings you experience.
So, you can see, the pictures you make in your head and the words you say to yourself, powerfully but not always rationally, influence how you feel about something. Your mind likes what is familiar and dislikes what is unfamiliar Another rule of the mind that is pertinent to phobias is that your mind likes what is familiar to it and dislikes what is unfamiliar. Your mind will always steer you towards the familiar. Imagine a client who is terrified of cats, the fear is having a serious effect on their ability to travel because they are afraid of going anywhere where there may be an abundance of cats. Istanbul for instance is notorious for its feral cat population, known as sokak kedisi, ‘street cats’, with estimates ranging from a hundred thousand to over a million stray cats inhabiting the city.
During a session of COACHD Rapid Transformational Therapy™(RTT™) and Hypnotherapy, the client is regressed to a scene where their father was also really scared of cats. The client goes on to recall an event when she was a small baby, and a cat jumping into her pram (stroller). Seeing this, her father screamed, “Oh my God, that cat’s going to kill you.” He ran over, shoved the cat away and picked her up, acting very distressed and scared. This event led to an ‘imprint’ in the mind of the client that became their phobia of cats. Armed with this information we can then transform these old beliefs into empowering new ones, ridding the client completely of their fear and phobia, forever. What is an imprint and how does it impact us? If something traumatic happens to you as a small child, such as witnessing an adult screaming, crying, or acting scared or angry, the child can form an imprint based on that event and the adult's reaction. In the example above, the client’s imprint was that cats are scary, and they kill children. A belief like this one can become reinforced by further events such as the father also telling them not to touch cats because they can scratch and give you septicaemia which can kill you. For the child, this further reinforces the message that ‘cats can kill you’. In fact, it is highly unlikely that a cat could kill you. However, this client has formed a full-blown phobia, reinforced by the fact that every time the father saw a cat he got really upset, screaming, and shouting that they are dirty and that they scratch and bite.
In reviewing this with the client, they can now understand where their phobia came from, and we can help them let go of this irrational fear, accepting that it was no longer relevant to their life, and that it was their father’s fear not their own, and that they had the power and choice to change their feelings towards cats forever. Causes of Fears and Phobias Whatever someone's phobia is, no one is born with a phobia!
People are not born with phobias; no baby thinks that a cat or any other animal is going to bite them. In fact, if you leave a baby alone, it will stick its hand in a dog’s mouth and pull on a dog’s ear. A baby will happily put an insect in their mouth and swallow the most unlikely things. Unattended a baby would stick their fingers in an electric socket or crawl off a ledge, simply because they have no concept of fears or phobias.
Babies are only born with two fears: the fear of being dropped and the fear of loud noises. Both are primitive reactions that are hard-wired into their subconscious mind. Babies have not yet developed the fears that people learn as they grow up. A baby doesn't fear someone knocking at the door late at night or fear the plane they're on crashing. Neither do they think “Oh no if I have any more milk, I’m going to get fat!” Fears and phobias are acquired and can be released People’s fears go back to the idea that something will kill them, but generally, these are things that won’t kill them at all. Their belief is a state of mind based on their imagination and not based on logic. To feel safe, they must choose to believe they are safe. If someone believes they are safe they will feel better than someone who believes that they are not safe. We use powerful therapeutic tools and techniques to teach our clients how to embody the belief of feeling safe and empower them to use their brilliant minds so that they can live confidently, knowing that they always have a choice. How the mind works and why it’s your master key The mind hates change. Why? Because you’re still alive. That’s why!
Simply put the mind (your mind) believes that the reason for your survival is all down to a set of beliefs, thoughts, and feelings that it has become accustomed to, the same ones that drive your actions, and presumably ‘keep you alive’. So far as your mind is concerned, you’re doing all that nature intended you to do, while ever you’re alive that is. Firm in the belief that it’s ‘doing the right thing’, the mind vehemently resists change, even if you wished it wouldn’t because the change would be good for you.
So, if you’ve been routinely convincing yourself that you’re a nervous wreck, scared and fearful, and lacking in confidence, your mind will do everything it can to make that your reality. It will make you nervous and anxious and give rise to an even more powerful ‘inner critic’. It will keep you exactly where you’re telling it you want to be. Although the mind resists change from the familiar to the unfamiliar, what the mind is quite brilliant at is changing through repetition – tell it something enough times and in the right way and it happily recodes itself to the new instruction. That’s an aspect of the mind that COACHD takes advantage of when using our Rapid Transformational Therapy™(RTT™) and Hypnotherapy to treat clients suffering from fears and phobias.
Every thought you think, every word you say to yourself and every picture you create in your mind, form a blueprint that your mind and body work to make your reality. And since your mind responds to the thoughts and words you tell it, then, by definition, it will protect them and make them your reality. Knowing this, you can see that your reality isn’t something external to you, it is whatever reality you create in your mind. Your mind doesn't care about being happy We imagine that our mind’s job is to make us happy, and yet it really isn’t. Our mind's job is to ensure we survive against what were once terrible odds. And one of the ways we survived was in the way our mind responded to the things we said to ourselves, such as ‘That would kill me, or I’d die if that happened.’ Upon hearing this, our mind would go into red alert, doing whatever was necessary to prevent the fateful event from occurring. Roll forward to today, and nothing has changed, our mind still thinks and acts the same as was the case during tougher times, when hardship was a daily event and death was far more likely. Therefore, it is up to us to tell ourselves a different story if we want our mind and body to give us an outcome that is befitting of better circumstances.
That said, we still tell ourselves some pretty crazy stuff, and sometimes, we subconsciously create functions and intentions for the fears and phobias we’re consequently experiencing. These emotional fears are very often expressed through the body as physical symptoms, which can be extreme. Thankfully, the solution to this problem is quite simple, only requiring us to train ourselves to think better thoughts. Tell yourself a better story Creating better thoughts means telling ourselves a better story.
Our brains are wired to chase familiar experiences and avoid unfamiliar ones. This makes sense from a point of reducing risk and increasing our chance of survival, or so the mind believes. Trying something new is always harder, or risker than doing something you’ve always done.
This tendency towards the familiar can lead to some dangerous habits too. Have you ever experienced a toxic relationship? Often, that toxicity becomes so familiar, that suddenly it becomes your reality and the experience that you move towards, time and time again. In doing so, you also create a false narrative, telling yourself that this is how relationships are for you, and how they need to be, and you stay a part of that false narrative for as long as possible. Humans are hard-wired to recreate what is familiar to them, we prefer what we know, even if it’s bad for us.
So how do we change our story? How do we make thoughts like ‘I’m strong, I’m powerful, I’m resilient, fear has no place in me’ stick in our brains and become the familiar way of thinking?.
Well, you can start by getting up each and every morning and telling yourself, ‘I’m a strong person. I’m a confidence machine, I have meaning, and I have something to offer the world. I’m here for a reason.’ Whatever it is you most want to hear, say it to yourself, because your mind doesn’t know what’s coming, it’s just waiting for your next instruction, so why not make those instructions the things that make you feel powerful and fearless? Keep in mind that the words you say to yourself and the pictures you create in your head cause your body to have a physical response, usually of equal measure and proportion, so choosing your words wisely means they will work for you and not against you.
Sure it sounds almost too easy, but here’s the thing, you have to be consistent. If you’re going to tell yourself a better story and you want it to stick, you absolutely must tell yourself that story every day, always and forever - the mind learns through repetition.
There is actually nothing on the planet that will release your fears and contribute to your well-being more than receiving someone's praise, but self-praise is even better. And because the mind likes repetition so much, when praising yourself every day for your rational thinking, strength and confidence, your mind thinks, ‘Here you go again with that praise. You say it every day, it must be true.’ Similarly, if you criticise yourself every day, your mind works the exact same way, accepting it to be the truth and helping build upon this blueprint as your preferred mode of being.
A massive part of your confidence and well-being relies on the story you’re telling yourself. Bad things will inevitably happen to you, as with everyone else, and when something bad does happen, you will inevitably attach meaning to that event. Blaming yourself, and self-criticism are harmful, but you can reverse these familiar responses and change your story from ‘I’m a weakling’ to ‘I’m a warrior’ and see the remarkable effect that has on your life and the symptoms you’ve been experiencing.
