If you find it hard to relax you could be suffering from stress, worry, or anxiety.
We can help you find perfect relaxation. Category: Mental Health Conditions: Relaxation, Stress, Worry, Anxiety, Sleep Problems Back to What We Treat You're not alone! Over 70% of adults have experienced stress in the last 12 months, which affects their mental and physical health and prevents them from feeling relaxed.
An inability to feel relaxed lays in people's stress, worry and anxious thoughts, and so it is important to consider the difference between these issues to help you understand the cause of your own relaxation problem. What’s the difference between stress, worry and anxiety? Your heart is racing, your palms are sweating, and your breathing is shallow. You are anxious.
Or are you stressed? Worried even?
If you find it hard to distinguish between stress, worry, and anxiety, you are not alone. With symptoms that overlap, knowing which one you are experiencing can be tricky, but there are subtle differences.
Read on to discover the differences between anxiety, stress, and worry, and which one you could be experiencing, and how COACHD can help you overcome it. Is it worry? Worry is the product of a person's thoughts, emotions, and actions when driven by negative thinking.
Some people seem to worry about everything. You can probably identify people in your life who are constant worriers. They appear to be the eternal pessimist, always expecting or preparing for the worst, you hear it in everything they say and you see it in their actions too.
Most people worry from time to time but when the worrying becomes chronic, it can seriously interfere with your daily life. The pattern of negative thoughts can become an uncontrollable cycle which, if left unchecked can escalate into irrational fears and phobias.
People that get fixated on a problem, are more likely to let their worries get the better of them. We remind our clients that a problem is only a problem if they make it a problem, and we teach them the importance of viewing a problem or potential problem from the correct perspective. We call this perspective the 3 Ps. We tell our clients that for a problem to truly be a problem it must satisfy the following criteria:
It must be permanent in that it never goes away.
It must be all-pervasive in that it is always occurring, every minute of the day.
It must be personal to them (their problem) and not someone else.
By asking themselves these questions, our clients are empowered with the feeling of control over their situation. The chances are that it’s not by this definition a problem they are facing, instead, it’s an obstacle, hurdle, or barrier that they can overcome with the right help and support. This method of perspectivisation can immediately reduce the worry associated with their situation. Is it stress? While worry is caused by our internal thoughts, stress is a reaction to our external pressures. Some examples of the triggers that can cause stress include moving house, going through a divorce, becoming a parent or the build-up to an important interview. Stress can have a major impact on both the mind and the body.
So what happens when we’re stressed?
Stress is not just in your head; it is in your body too. 77% of people report that the stress they are experiencing affects their physical health(1). The symptoms(2) of stress include:
Difficulty sleeping
Exhaustion
Muscle tension
Headaches
Clenched jaw
Chest pains
Digestive problems
Dizziness
Shallow breathing
When the cause of the stress is external, it is easy for people to feel at a loss as to how to overcome it. However, we show our clients that they do have the power to deal with stress, as illustrated throughout this information.
When someone is stressed, it triggers their sympathetic nervous system, during which they are constantly in ‘fight or flight’ mode. To free themselves from the effects of stress, they need to stimulate their parasympathetic nervous system, the body state where natural healing and renewal occur. We teach our clients to make time for calming activities, that slow their heart rate, and ask them to listen to one of our guided meditation or hypnosis audios, specifically designed to eliminate the feelings associated with stress. These recordings can help them feel calm both in the moment and long term by providing them with practical, empowering tools and techniques to manage stress. Is it anxiety? The biggest difference between stress and anxiety is the existence of a threat. While stress is caused in response to external factors, anxiety is characterized as a persistent feeling of apprehension or dread(3) in a situation where there is no threat.
If someone hates their job and they are stressed, then by definition, once they quit, the symptoms of the stress will go away on their own. However, if the feeling of stress lingers long after the problem has been resolved then this would be anxiety.
With anxiety, an individual will envisage a threat where there is none, such as reading too much into an email from a colleague and fearing that their job is at risk. The threat is imagined but feels very real to the individual. Anxious feelings can manifest into an anxiety disorder which has a significant impact on the person's day-to-day life and well-being. Anxiety disorders include panic disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), and social phobia(4). Knowing 'you are enough' changes everything The thing we see most people struggling with is always a belief ‘I’m not enough’.
That feeling of not being enough is easily the biggest issue our clients face. In fact, without any consultation, we can confidently tell our clients that there are only three things that can be wrong with them. The first is, I’m not enough. The second is, I’m different, so I can’t connect. And the third is, I really want something, like freedom from stress or anxiety, but it isn’t available to me. A possible fourth belief is, even if there is help available to me, I don’t deserve it.
Ultimately what this feeling of not being enough comes down to is a lack of self-belief and the fear of rejection. From birth, we are hard-wired to find connection and avoid rejection. It’s the fear of rejection that is crippling and can cause many of the issues we treat in our clinic. We teach our clients that the only person who could truly reject them is them and that other people can only reject them if they choose to let the feeling in. ‘I am enough’ is a phrase we ask our clients to tell themselves repeatedly because when they know they are enough, and they truly believe it, everything is available to them. Help is available to you! We help our clients understand that their thoughts become reality, so they can actively work towards changing that reality into something positive, uplifting, and healthy. We not only help our clients improve their emotional health but many aspects of their physical health too. Emotional pain is often expressed through the body, so we work on improving our client's patterns of thought so that their physical self is affected positively as a result.
If you’ve been routinely convincing yourself that you are a failure and lack confidence, your mind will do everything it can to make that your reality. Stress, worry and anxiety issues are all good examples of this, they are your mind and body's response to the beliefs you hold about yourself and a way of protecting you from a fear of failure or judgement.
Repeated negative thoughts will demotivate you and give rise to an even more powerful ‘inner critic’. It will keep you exactly where you tell it you want to be. Although the mind resists change, it is quite brilliant at learning through repetition – tell it something enough times and in the right way and it happily recodes itself to the new instruction. That’s an aspect of the mind that COACHD takes full advantage of with our Rapid Transformational Therapy™(RTT™) and Hypnotherapy when treating clients suffering from stress.
Every thought you think, every word you say to yourself and every picture you create in your mind, form a blueprint that your mind and body work to make your reality. And since your mind responds to the thoughts and words you tell it, then, by definition, it will protect them and make them your reality. Knowing this, you can see that your reality isn’t something external to you, it is whatever reality you create in your mind.
